Why is ethnic minority poverty prevalent in Vietnam?

Ethnic minorities account for 15% of Vietnam's population but they are about 70% of the people in dire categories of poverty (measured according to the national extreme poverty standard). The Kinh is a major ethnic group in Vietnam and after many years of development they have the highest living standards out of all of Vietnam comparable to ethnic minorities.

There are many detrimental disadvantages that contribute to their persistent poverty. Ethnic minorities are geographically isolated; most of them live in low-population density cities with limited access to the market, trading, and resources. In tandem with this, they are also socially, culturally and linguistically isolated, and they are often stigmatised by the media and people all across Vietnam. Additionally, they have limited access to quality land, or have access to a limited amount of tillage, oftentimes having to rely on rudimentary farming practices and terraces. Furthermore, the rate of emigration from their place of residence is low and the economic opportunities they have are also hindered due to language, thus, leaving them with no opportunity to earn an education and trapping even more people in a cyclical loop of poverty.

As exemplified by many resources, ethnic minorities in Vietnam are facing the risk of disappearing due to the very low population, especially given the challenging socio-economic living conditions. Alarming indicators regarding the population quality of these small ethnic groups have come to light. Their average life expectancy is just 69.9 years, falling 3.4 years short of the national average. Their physical stature reaches average heights ranging from 1.40 to 1.55 meters and weights between 40 and 45 kilograms, due to the malnourishment of young children in these areas.

Despite all of these challenges, ethnic minorities are still able to sustain themselves through multiple generations by their own tenacity and self-sufficient model of living. However, to eradicate barriers regarding social stigma and foster an environment that incentivises growth in these regions, My Egret’s Delivery Service aims to make an impact through charitable donations across many areas in Vietnam. Our egrets will reach even the farthest places in order to contribute to better living conditions and provide resources to ethnic minorities who need it most.
